Supervision and Consultation

Holly offers both individual and group supervision opportunities for Residents in Counseling, Residents is Marriage and Family Therapy and for Play Therapy, or any combination. In addition, she offers one time and regular consultation services. Research supports the notion that practicing alone and without regular consultation leads to a greater incidence of complaints and treatment that may not be as effective.

Holly’s special interest includes ethical issues. She has recently served for 8 years on The Board of Counseling and as the Regulatory Committee Chair for part of that time.

She brings over 35 years experience both within the military setting and out. These experiences include: Red Cross Emergency Services for the military, Level 1 and Level 2 substance misuse programs for the Navy (NADSAP and CAAC), early research related to trauma and the formation of TF-CBT, early research related to gambling addiction and the expanding availability of electronic gambling devises, crisis work, home-based family therapy, and psychiatric hospital assessments and admissions. Professional volunteer work has including Red Cross crisis work, Mental Health Team member for Tidewater EMS (over 10 years), formal pro bono post large scale traumatic events.

I have chosen to conduct my supervision using a model that employs three roles: teacher, counselor, and consultant. Most often I use the teacher and consultant roles. The counselor role is used at those times when the supervisee’s thoughts or feelings are stimulated by the client to the point where they may interfere with the efficacious treatment of the client. However, any intervention will be limited to client treatment-related issues, as ethically I cannot provide therapy for you as part of my supervision. Supervision is an interactive process, you can expect to receive feedback on your clinical interventions and to have a supportive environment in which to explore client-related concerns. I believe my role as your clinical supervisor is to assist you in practicing counseling in the most effective, ethical and legal manner possible, given your choice of counseling theories, approaches and interventions. I employ both a collaborative and Socratic method during supervision, encouraging independent thinking and learning.
