Making an Informed Decision about Using Insurance:
When choosing to use your insurance for counseling sessions your privacy and finances are impacted. Treatment authorizations and claims payment require proof of functional impairment and medical necessity using standards set by your insurance company. In order to authorize and reimburse for treatment, insurance companies can and do require significant details pertaining to your mental health and functioning. Counseling is only covered when it is related to a diagnosed mental health condition which becomes part of your permanent medical record. This may affect your insurability for future insurance (i.e. health, disability, etc.). Insurance companies have the right to review treatment records at any time to ensure that treatment was medically necessary, by their definitions. If they determine that the treatment was not medically necessary, even if they authorized the treatment, they can rescind payment. In such cases, you are responsible for payment. Considering this information, we encourage you to explore the implications of utilizing insurance. Please feel free to ask questions about this with PBP or with your insurance company. We strongly encourage you to contact your insurance company to clarify the details of your individual coverage.
